Remember the news about the “Mission Possible” project aimed at helping the FairMail teenagers identify and chase their own dreams?

Only a few months later, Paul and Dante have already achieved their goal by getting admitted into a soccer academy. Step one according to them to follow the steps of their soccer heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

True empowerment
The core of the Mission Possible project is that the teenagers have to come up with their OWN dreams and their OWN action plan with steps that THEY can take. It would probably seem a lot easier if FairMail took them by the hand to undertake the necessary actions. But real empowerment according to us is to guide them from one step behind, leaving all the action and decisions to them, and of course their parents.

Perhaps taking some wrong decisions along the way. But hey, you can only learn from your mistakes right? And if in the end they achieve their goals they can feel extra proud and generate even more self-esteem as the success was really thanks to their own efforts!

How to get to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona?

In the case of Paul and Dante their dream is to become a professional soccer player. That way they hope to be able to help their families and make them proud. Both love soccer and play every day with the other kids at the Mundo de Ninos boys’ home where they both live. To get to a higher level and possibly be scouted by professional soccer clubs they needed to enter a soccer academy. Which is not as easy as becoming member of a soccer club in Europe for example. Through their own effort and asking help from people around them, they got a chance to show their talent at FC Cantera in Trujillo. They apparently impressed their coaches as both got admitted!

Hopefully in the next newsletter we will have more news about other teenagers achieving their Mission Possible. Stay tuned.

The great thing about the FairMail cards is that you can see on the back of each card who you are supporting directly with your purchase. Each FairMail teenager has his or her own story about dreams, hardships, passions and getting ahead in life.

We have now updated the personal profile pages of our current photographers in Peru with 9 new recorded video updates. You can view all of them below or on each teenager’s personal profile page.

FairMail teenagers volunteer in street children’s shelter

FairMail Peru and Mundo de Ninos team together

For the recruitment of motivated but at-risk teenagers FairMail cooperates with different local charities working with the same target group. This means we work with a mix of teenagers who either used to live on the street, recycled garbage to supplement the family income or whose parents were not able to pay for their children’s education. The cooperation also allows us to combine efforts and strategies with the social workers and psychologists working for our partner organisations to keep “our” kids on the right track.

But how much do the FairMail teenagers themselves know about the backgrounds of their colleagues?

Visit to Mundo de Ninos boys home

That is why we organized several exchange visits for the FairMail teenagers to our partner organisations. A few weeks back the entire Peruvian FairMail team visited the Mundo de Ninos boys home. This street children’s shelter in Huanchaquito works hard to get street children off from the streets and to provide them with a home, food, love and education. In total 11 of the 30 Peruvian FairMail teenagers have lived in Mundo de Ninos. At this moment Paul and Dante have Mundo de Ninos as their substitute families.

Adding a female touch

Their social worker suggested that the boys’ room needed a bit of a “female touch” to make it more cozy. So during FairMail class the teenagers worked in pairs to make picture frames from recycled materials in order to put up six of Paul and Dante’s own pictures on their walls. During the visit in March we put up the frames. Paul and Dante’s room now looks great! Not only showcasing their talent for photography and providing fond memories of the moments they took their pictures, but also as lasting symbols of their new friendships within FairMail.

Soccer tournament

To get to know Paul and Dante’s housemates we also joined in a mini soccer tournament with the other (smaller) boys and their tutors. FairMail’s female soccer team lost from the smallest Mundo  de Ninos kids after a penalty shoot-out. While the FairMail boy’s suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat by the older Mundo de Ninos kids. But more important were the shared moments of fun and laughter. And that the entire FairMail team now knows a bit more about where Paul and Dante are coming from.

Photography students become teachers

Earlier that month a youth delegation of another partner organisation, YMCA El Milagro who works with families living near the garbage dump, visited FairMail. During the occasion the FairMail teenagers acted as photography trainers, giving a photography workshop to the YMCA teenagers. It was great to see our students in their new roles as teachers and share their passion! This showed to be contagious as at the end of the workshop some of the YMCA kids were informing about how they could join FairMail. To be continued …..

For the Peruvian teenagers 2015 was a year full of broken bones, broken friendships, getting first place, getting promoted, valuable lessons in life and many other things.

Especially for you, we asked the teenagers to update their personal profile pages with last year’s highs and lows. Plus their plans for the coming year, explaining how they plan to use their part of the earnings from the sale of their fair trade FairMail cards to enter university, study English and start a new business among other things.

We also uploaded short new videos of the 4 newest FairMail teenagers presenting themselves which you can view below:

We are thrilled to announce that the FairMail team in Peru has 2 new members: Bryan (14) and Dante (13). Together with 2 other girls they started their one month trial period in June.

These 4 teenagers were put forward by our local partners Mundo de Niños, Milagro School and LitClub Cerrito de la Virgen. The idea of the trial period is to give the candidates the opportunity during one month to find out if they are really interested to learn about photography. Plus to show us their motivation for school, responsibility in handling our cameras, their punctuality, honesty and good companionship.

After a couple of weeks one of the two girls came to the conclusion it would be difficult to combine her school work, current activities for the LitClub and Milagro school with her new activities for FairMail. This was unfortunate for FairMail as we did see quite some photography talent in her. But at the same time we respected her responsible and realistic decision.

New FairMail teenager Bryan

After the first month Bryan and Dante impressed us most with their responsibility and motivation. Both also fitted in very nicely with the other current teenagers so we decided to give them the opportunity to become a permanent member of FairMail Peru. Yeah! You can read more about Bryan and Dante on their personal profile pages. We wish them a lot of luck with their new part-time career as photographers and hope to present their first FairMail cards to you very soon!

The fourth candidate didn’t manage to convince us during the first month so we decided to give her a second and last chance. She told us she really liked photography and wanted to be part of FairMail so we gave her one more month to show that to us. Unfortunately during that period she was not able to stick to the general FairMail rules and was not offered a participation contract.

With Bryan and Dante joining the team there are currently 27 teenagers who offer their pictures through FairMail in Peru and 52 in total (including India and Morocco). By the end of the year we hope to fill 2 more vacancies.
