FairMail India office evacuated due to floodings

View of the street from the FairMail office

Every year from June to September the heavy monsoon rains fall on India’s dry soil. This is vital for the rain fed agriculture. However this year intense rains have caused the worst flooding in the past 10 years. The situation got so bad that even the FairMail office got surrounded by the rising water and had to be evacuated.

The FairMail office is situated in Nagwa, in the pilgrim city of Varanasi on the borders of the holy Ganges river. The river had to carry so much rain water that the river left its borders. This happens every year during the monsoon. But this year the amount of water was so much that the water flooded parts of Nagwa too. First the water entered the houses of a few of our teenage photographers and their families.

The water just kept rising until also the streets around the FairMail office where flooded. There was no other option then to evacuate the FairMail office and look for another temporary housing option for our volunteer and to suspend the free photography classes until the office would be accessible again.

We were very lucky that the FairMail office is on the third story. Four of our teenagers were less lucky as they had to move themselves and their belongings to the roofs of their houses. Instead of being desperate their reaction was more calm. “You just have to manage it” is mostly their reply when the going gets tough.

Like with FairMail teenagers Anil Rao who is brushing his teeth up to his knees in the water running through the street in front of his house.  There is perhaps a lot of wisdom in their reaction. Because in the end it all comes down to how you handle a situation and can manage with the means you do have available.  Like this man on a rikshaw below.

FairMail Peru office adapts to climate change

A fresh wind of change is also blowing through the FairMail office in Peru where the photography teaching area and storage room are being remodeled. Due to climate change the dessert city of Trujillo is now regularly hit by surprise rain showers neither the city nor the FairMail office where prepared for. The tent above the teaching area wasn’t giving enough protection anymore. Also the red glow it gave to all the pictures taken under the tarp had been a nuisance for a long time.

So when, with the help of a donation from a photography traveler, the opportunity was there we decided to replace the tent with a decent and transparent plastic roof. This is now finished as you can see in the pictures with the new classroom only needing a new paint job. Thanks to the help of the teenagers who helped during the construction really making it their classroom again.

Next on the list is the construction of a professional photo studio in the former storage room. With FairMail’s changing business model towards concept and picture licensing instead of own card production the old storage room is no longer necessary. With the increased demand from our customers for “table top photography” in different greeting card themes we decided to change the storage room into a mini photo studio. The old shelves will be converted into glass tables letting through soft light on which we will place the new tabletop photo studio’s we bought with the help of a donation by Back Picture. We are also looking to install special lighting and increase the space so all the teenagers have enough space to let their creativity go wild.

We are very happy that now in Peru the teenagers can do what they do best under better circumstances and would like to thank Marlies Ketelaar and Back Picture for their valuable financial support in improving our production facilities. The Peruvian teenagers are very happy with their more professional photo studio.

FairMail Peru photographer Elmer gives his family a safe house to live in

Elmer's mothers house before remodelling

Elmer

Also looking very new is the house of ex-FairMail Peru photographer Elmer Machuca Chacon. When he turned 19 last year he not only left FairMail, but also the Mundo de Ninos boys home for ex-street children and moved back into his mother’s house in El Alto in Trujillo. The house he had left when he was 11 years old to roam on the streets (click here for the video about Elmer’s life back then).

El Alto is a new part of the city of Trujillo, lying on the sandy outskirts overlooking the city. Many of the newcomers to the city, looking for work they can’t find in the rural areas, squat a piece of land here to build their new home. Like Elmer’s mother 10 years ago. With a lot of poverty and little social cohesion El Alto is a dangerous part of Trujillo which Elmer himself encountered when he was robbed last January.

To make sure he and his family are at least safe inside their house Elmer used part of his FairMail earnings to remodels his mother’s house. He bought new strong iron doors, barred windows and new locks. While installing the metal work in the walls of the house they re-did the front façade of the house in one go, giving it a fresh new look. Of the 50% profit that the teenagers earn they can spend a maximum of 25% to improve their family housing, this way giving their family a short term benefit too of their children’s participation in FairMail.

His family is very thankful for Elmer’s support, especially after his difficult youth. Mrs. Eva Maria, his mother, is very proud of her son and the results he is booking and thankful to the people who bought her son’s cards and pictures.

Betty from FairMail Peru

Betty from FairMail Peru

Last week we received a message from one of our Peruvian photographers: Betty. Because of domestic problems she had to leave her house with her mother, sister and two brothers. Despite that though she is determined to bring the new beginning to a good end. This is the translation of her message:

Hello friends, my name is Betty.

I live in El Milagro (name of the outscirts of Tujillo where the cities garbage belt is situated) with my mother, sister and two brothers. Due to domestic problems my mother had to get seperated from my father. Now we only live with my mother. I am 17 years old and member of the  asociación de jóvenes cristianos del Perú (ACJ red. Peruvian version of the YMCA).

Well, my family and I have always worked on the garbage belt to find materials which we could recycle and which I would have to sell. I was totally fed up with this work. When I participated in a ACJ workshop I heard people talk about an interesting company called FairMail. Unfortunately I did not know how you could get a job there, but I knew that one day I would succeed.

By now I am working for FairMail for almost 2 years. Itis cool because we work together like brothers and sisters. I am using the money I earned with my card sale to pay for things to finish my secondary school and for the admission acadamy I am studying in now. I want to take the exam to get admitted to the National University of Trujillo where I want to study communication sciences. I am happy with FairMail and that this way I was able to pay for my own study. And not have to be a burden for my parents now that they don’t have the money to support me in this.

Right now I am living with my mother, brothers and sister in the house of my grandma. There we built a little room for ourselfves out of reed mats so we have a place to sleep. I know that with the sale of my cards I will make progress in life and acheive the goals I have in mind for me and my family. So we can all live in happines.

Thanks to everyone. I invite you to buy the cards of FairMail India and FairMail Peru. I hope there are some cards that you wil like.

Thanks, Betty Chanta

Cinthia Vega tells her succes story

Cinthia Vega Inga

Cinthia Vega Inga

Hi my name is Cinthia and I am an ex-photographer from FairMail Perú.

I entered FairMail when I was about 15 years old, and I tell you that we met Janneke and Pèter, both Dutch, when they where volunteering for a NGO called ACJ (asociación cristiana de jóvenes del Peru), and Mundo de Ninos.

Seeing that we where curious about having a camera in our hands they had the great idea in their little heads that told them “these kids need a camera in their hands” and like that their dream became reality.

What happened after that? Their thoughts became reality and we started with 14 or 15 kids of which only 4 got to stay. I was one of them, together with a friend called Rosita and two friends called Luis and David. We all made use of this great oppertunity given to us by people who gave us information about photography, who where our teachers. In the beginning they themselves taught us and after that came the volunteers, mainly from Holland. Well time passed and we went on photography trips to take more great pictures. These pictures made a big transformation to become postcards even for export! This created an income but with a few conditions attached. As the kids that participate in this business called FairMail (correo justo) we are have little economic means, and this money is divided in different parts like: education fund, cloathing fund, housing fund and health fund.

Thanks to the help of the postcards and the people who bought them we where able to acheive many things that perhaps our parents wouldn’t have been abot to give us on the long term.

I Cinthia Vega thank janneke, Peter, and all of those who help us. Thanks to the sale of my cards and the profit that came from them I bought my own computer which helped me a lot to do my school work. Of course I also started studyiny at an institute in Trujillo called  ”Cevatur Trujillo”. And after three years I finished my career and now I am doing my practical period at the Temple of the Sun and the Moon, an historic site. And I also work as guide on FairMail’s photography trips.

But that’s not all. I can also tell you that when you turn 19 years old your participation in FairMail ends. But they gave me the opportunity to keep on working as assistant manager. That way I managed to save the 1.100 soles (300 euros) for the construcion of my own sleeping room and I keep earning money from the sale of my cards.

A thousand thanks to all of you. I love you

Greetings: cinthia vega

Mariaflor puts roof on family house

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

mariaflor200Great news from Mariaflor who managed to improve her families house with a real door and a sturdy roof out of her earnings from the sale of her FairMail cards. Ever since a new pub opened its doors a few doors down the block the old door made of recycled bits of steel no longer offered the necessary protection from invading drunks. Together with her mother and FairMail Peru’s manager they went to the hard ware store to by the necessary materials and contract a handy man. Now the job is finished and visitors to Mariaflor’s house can sit in a roofed living room in stead of an open air space between three mud brick walls.

The best thing of all is that Mariaflor was able to provide a serious contribution to her family. She is often arguing with her mother’s new boy friend who says she is wasting her time with FairMail and she should go find a “real” job in stead of continue studying. Now Mariaflor has contributed more to the housing of then the “family chief” who spends a big part of his earning drinking beer.  Yeah, girl power!
