More and more corporate customers are helping teenagers into the school benches

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

In pursuit of diversifying the income from the photography by the teenagers we are happy to see that more and more companies and organisations are asking FairMail to provide fairtrade images for their communications. This way not only helping the teenagers earn money to pay for their own education, but also providing added inspirational value for their communications.

Here are 3 examples of corporate communication helping teenagers into the school benches:

Year Report ASN Bank Foundation

The ethical ASN Bank has been a regular customer of FairMail for years now. For the 2014 year report of their foundation they asked FairMail to produce images of fair trade coffee producers in Peru. During the photography trip along the Organic Coffee Route Diana and Angeles shot images of the coffee farming family they stayed with for a couple of days. Allowing them to pay for their university education.

Producer images for fairtrade distributor El Puente

El Puente is one of Germany’s biggest distributors for the 800 German fairtrade shops. To communicate the story behind their fairtrade products they wanted pictures of their Peruvian producers. Therefor in November, 3 FairMail teenagers will travel to the capital of Lima for 3 days to visit 9 producer groups. Their pictures will not only show how they work, but also the impact fairtrade has on their lives.

Hotel Naylamp Website

Hotel Naylamp is based in the Peruvian fishing village of Huanchaco, just like FairMail Peru. When they wanted to update their website they asked the teenagers to shoot images of their rooms, restaurant and guests. Guided by 2 of our volunteer photography trainers they took the requested images during 4 FairMail classes. Definitely something different compared to shooting for FairMail’s Christmas cards!

Even though it is still summer in many parts of the world, our teenagers are already busy taking pictures for the upcoming Christmas card season. Among their customers this year is Ben & Jerry’s. They requested a tailor made picture for their fair trade corporate Christmas card. In order to do so they sent a box stuffed with all kinds of Ben & Jerry’s props like caps, pens, slippers, cooler bags, ice cream cups etc. to our teenagers in Peru.

The teenagers in Peru set their creativity to work. By first imagining their perfect picture that transmits the right feeling. After drawing their perfect picture they presented their ideas to the other photographers so everyone could give and get valuable feedback. By now everyone knew what to do and went to work.

After every photography session the pictures where evaluated during the FairMail class on the computer. With the help of the volunteer photography trainers points for improvement where discussed. This way in several rounds the pictures actually started becoming “perfect pictures”.

A pre-selection of 40 images has been sent to Ben & Jerry’s who will pick their favorite image for this year’s card. Exciting!

Teenage photographers work demand driven

More and more FairMail’s teenage photographers receive concrete photo assignments from organizations looking for a certain image. The past few months they have been working on assignments for three corporate customers. A day care organization and institute providing mental care who where looking for a picture for their corporate Christmas card. And a publisher of a children’s yoga calendar.

Both for the teenagers and for the photography teachers it is very nice to work demand driven on a concrete assignment. With the idea in mind that the teenager with the best pictures gets paid for his or her photo everybody is really motivated to work hard.

According to Elaine, currently one of the two volunteer photography trainers in India, “All of the teenagers worked really hard on our yoga project. We went out into the community and worked from the teenagers rooftops with lots of younger children from the area. All the kids were very happy and excited to help out and we all had alot of fun! The deadline for the competition gave them something to focus on and it was great to see them so motivated and eager to take great shots, it also forced them to develop great ideas quickly and be really creative.”

A selection of the best pictures has been sent to the three different clients who are evaluating the pictures. You can imagine just how excited the teenagers are to find out if their picture will be selected or not. And how happy he or she will be when they hear that a professional organization picked their picture.

It is still possible to have the teenagers take pictures for you on a no cure no pay basis. For instance for your employers corporate Christmas card. You can learn more about this option by clicking here or by contacting us directly.
