Every year, FairMail recognizes one photographer who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty by naming him/her Photographer of the Year.
The election of the Photographer of the Year usually takes place on the last class of the year and it is done through anonymous voting. Every member of FairMail votes for the person that has best embodied the 5 core values of FairMail: motivation, responsibility, honesty, solidarity and punctuality.
This year the election was particularly exciting because we had a tie between Julissa and Medalit, two of the most experienced FairMail photographers. What eventually made the difference was the extra point that we give to the person who has collected the highest number of green points (merit points) throughout the year, and not surprisingly this extra point went to…Julissa!
It was clear to everyone how she distinguished herself not only for her great photography skills but also for her personality that makes her a natural leader and role model within FairMail. She is an enthusiastic photographer who is willing to take up more initiatives and accepts more of tasks apart from her regular class routine. She is not afraid of responsibility and her positive attitude has an impact on the whole team. For these and many other reasons we couldn’t agree more on the result of this year’s election.

January and August are without any doubt two special months for FairMail. We all look forward to these 2 months with anticipation because it’s when we leave the desert Peruvian coast behind and we embark on some crazy adventures on the Andes or in the jungle.

In FairMail we do like to experiment, a lot. Be it with photography, craft, games or adventures. Trying out new things helps us step outside our comfort zone and gives us the chance to find out things that we love doing and realize our full potential.
amount of flour, kneading the dough, rolling and cutting it, not exactly a piece of cake for beginners! We were amazed by how committed the teenagers were and the results left us speechless. Despite the inevitable difference in texture, the noodles turned out just fine and we enjoyed them topped with an eggplant-carrot tomato sauce!
The day kicked off with a very interesting workshop on feedback held by our volunteer Jet. The teenagers learned how to give and receive feedback in a mature and constructive way, which is something that will prove to be particularly useful during photo sessions. The teenagers are now aware of the importance of listening and of phrasing the feedback in a way that doesn’t come out as offending.
After the distribution of the cards the party got into its full swing! Despite the hot temperature of the Peruvian summer, we enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate, a delicious Panetton from Mundo Pan (a local bakery owned by Mundo de Niños – the boy home from where we recruit our photographers) and chicken sandwiches made by Anidela and Angeles, our local managers.
